CRISTIANO ALVES
ABOUT
Cristiano Alves is a visual artist based in Brasília, Brazil. His practice investigates how machines see, capture, and reconstruct the world — and how images, both ancestral and computational, mediate our experience of the real. Working across interactive installation, video art, and audiovisual work, he combines custom-built hardware and locally-run artificial intelligence with longstanding image traditions such as the domestic oratory, the Greek mirror, the colonial azulejo panel, optical illusion, and instant photography.
His current research takes form in five projects in development. Imago Latens is built around a handcrafted camera that prints two instant photographs of each visitor — one captured as the lens sees it, the other reinterpreted by a generative model running entirely offline — making visible the gap between document and simulation. Resolutio is a photochromic diptych: the visitor's face, captured by camera, is inscribed by ultraviolet light onto two glass panels; on one it fades to white, on the other it is covered by a stain that spreads until it hides the face and then disperses, also into white — two halves of a single death, shown at once. Pictura rescripta is a wall of Portuguese azulejos built from colour e-ink panels, in which the figures of Otto van Veen's emblems (Emblemata Horatiana, Antwerp, 1607) are exchanged before the viewer, producing new meanings through recombination. Hierophantes takes a Greek caryatid mirror as its structural matrix and replaces its bronze disc with a circular OLED screen, so that visitors, instead of meeting their reflection, encounter a real-time anatomical image of their own body. Daimon ex machina reworks the myth of the devil in the bottle through a wooden oratory, a Pepper's Ghost illusion, and an autonomous artificial interlocutor that engages audiences without human mediation. In the works that employ artificial intelligence, local processing with no external connection is an aesthetic decision, not merely a technical one.
This research is informed by professional practice in visual design, animation, and moving image since 2005, with end-to-end experience leading projects for entertainment, education, and finance. His authorial animated shorts have been selected for festivals in Brazil and abroad. He runs Sisyphus Studio, through which he conducts his authorial production, and is registered as a cultural agent with CEAC/DF, the Federal District's register of cultural agents, in the fields of visual arts, art and technology, and digital culture. He holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design (Visual Programming) from Universidade São Judas Tadeu, a technology degree in Audiovisual Production from Centro Universitário Senac, and postgraduate specialisations in Instructional Design and in Production and Use of Technologies for Education from the Universidade Federal de São Carlos.
